Bicester redevelopment
Bicester, Oxfordshire has been given the green light to build the most sustainable development in the UK. Permission has been granted by Cherwell District Council to develop 2,600 zero–carbon homes in addition to the 393 already under construction, making the project the largest of its type in the UK. All properties are to include roof solar panels assisting in the vision of highly energy efficient homes.

Last April, work began on an initial batch of 393 homes and is expected to be completed within four and a half years. 91 of these are set to be completed by the end of 2015 enabling the first residents to move on-site in the late summer. All phases of the development are hoped to be completed by 2031.

The Masterplan includes provision for 40% green space incorporating a nature reserve, country park, burial ground, secondary school, business and commercial space, recreational facilities as well as on-site energy generation. Cycle ways, footpaths and public transport links are also an integral part of the scheme. 250 care homes for the elderly are also included within the plans.

Planning committee vice chairman, Colin Clarke, described the project as ‘unique’ and ‘by far the largest project of its type anywhere in the UK’.
