Guide to Kentish Town

Kentish Town is an area in northwest London, situated to the north of Camden Town. It has a relatively large boundary that stretches from Camden Gardens to the junction near Dartmouth Park. Other neighbouring areas include Highgate, Barnsbury, Holloway, Hampstead and Highgate.

The high street in Kentish Town has a mixture of independent stores, including a long-standing bookshop, and national retail chains. There are a number of ‘World Food’ shops on the street, though there has been an increase in the appearance of chain eateries, such as Pret a Manger, since 2009.

There are a range of transport connections in Kentish Town, including a mainline station on the St Albans / Luton Airport to Brighton / Gatwick line. The area also has underground and overground connections, as well as numerous bus routes, with the majority travelling into Central London.

Kentish Town has been used as a filming location for many popular movies, including About a Boy, It Always Rains on Sunday and Bad Behaviour.

Many famous faces do or have resided in the Kentish Town area, including Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance, classic novelist George Orwell and 19th Century Philosopher Karl Marx.

Music is a huge part of Kentish Town’s culture, and there are a number of music pubs dotted around the area, most famously ‘Tally Ho’, a former jazz pub. Other music pubs in Kentish Town include the Bull and Gate, which has seen early performances from the likes of Coldplay, Blur, Suede and the Housemartins. The area is also home to live music venue The Forum.

In recent years, Kentish Town has been at the forefront of the UK’s insurgence of real ale pubs, such as the CAMRA award-winning Southampton Arms. Other real ale pubs in the area include The Pineapple and Tapping the Admiral, which has previously won the CAMRA North London Pub of the Year award.

There are a number of art galleries, creative spaces and studios in Kentish Town, including The Beardsmore Gallery, Leighton Space and Spring Studios.
