Guide to Chertsey

Considered to be one of Surrey’s most pleasant commuter towns, Chertsey boasts an elegant blend of period properties, a characterful shopping district and abundant access to green space. Couple these assets with fantastic transport links – London Waterloo can be reached in under an hour by train, while the M3 and M25 border the town to the north and west respectively – and it’s clear to see why property in Chertsey is in such high demand.

Chertsey Abbey – the remains of which can be seen today in the Abbeyfields area – dates back to the 7th century CE, while the town itself appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Certesi.

The town rose in prominence during the 18th century with the construction of Chertsey Bridge, an important crossing of the River Thames. Then in 1848 the railway came to town, providing residents with an easy way to visit London.

Traces of Chertsey’s history can be seen in its elegant architecture. The town boasts several 18th century listed buildings, including Chertsey Bridge, much of the high street, and the imposing Botleys Mansion.

However, the town’s glories certainly aren’t confined to the past. The town centre was redeveloped in the 2000s, transforming Chertsey’s shopping and entertainment scenes. Today, numerous trendy bars and restaurants can be found in the area, alongside a mix of independent and big-name retailers.

The town is also home to some important employers – particularly Compass Group, the world’s largest contract foodservice company, and Samsung Electronics. Thorpe Park, one of the UK’s biggest theme parks, is also located close to the town.
