The small Surrey town of Egham lies within the Greater London Urban Area, with trains to Waterloo station taking less than an hour. While this naturally makes the town popular with commuters, there is plenty more to love about Egham than its proximity to the capital.
Perhaps Egham’s greatest claim to fame is its role in Magna Carta, the revolutionary charter of liberties that played a fundamental role in the development of democracy as we know it today. The legendary document was sealed in 1215 at nearby Runnymede. A memorial celebrating the charter was built by the American Bar Association at the foot of Cooper’s Hill in Egham, while a statue depicting King John and Baron Fitzwalter in the process of sealing Magna Carta can be found in the town centre.
Fast-forwarding to the current day, the town maintains a character and spirit of its own despite being so close to London. The prestigious Royal Holloway, University of London is located in Egham; the sizeable student population helps to bring a cosmopolitan feel to the area.
