Our Hemel Hempstead branch were delighted when a local resident came in and handed them a piece of Chancellors history…

An old property document from the 1930’s was brought into the branch, advertising two semi-detached houses for sale at the Bay Road Estate in Bracknell which were being sold by our Ascot & Sunningdale branch which are now separate branches due to expansion over the years.

The local resident mentioned that this document was found when clearing out old boxes of belongings from her loft and it originally belonged to her parents who we assume were interested in purchasing one of the properties and may have attended the open house viewing for them.

If you’d like to see this rare piece of Chancellors history, we invite you to come into our Hemel Hempstead branch and ask a member of staff.

We’re pleased to see that this document is still intact and legible, despite being over 80 years old! View the prices below of these properties to see how much they were on sale for back in the 1930’s:

Type A price freehold – £550

  • Deposit £25
  • Weekly repayments 14/4 over a period of 23 years

Type B price freehold – £575

  • Deposit £27.10
  • Weekly repayments 14/9 over a period of 23 years

Using the Bank of England’s inflation calculator (assuming they were being sold in 1937), if these houses were on the market in 2018, the deposits would be £1,672.89 and £1,806.72 with the freehold prices being £36,803.61 and £38,476.51. This shows what a great investment property has been over the years. Whilst these prices are still significantly lower than the average cost of a two bedroom semi-detached property nowadays, the deposits would be 4.55% and 4.7% which is reflected in modern society with just a 5% deposit required to purchase a brand new home with the government-backed Help to Buy scheme.*

Chancellors heritage dates back over 200 years and it’s very rare that we come across historic documents like this. If you or somebody you know has a piece of Chancellors history in their home, please bring it into your nearest branch (which you can find here) so we can take a look.
