Northwood offers quick and easy access to central London, giving you the best of both worlds: the hustle and bustle of London on tap, with relaxing, green spaces at home.

Ruislip Woods is a 726-acre stretch of woodland on your doorstep, and nestled within is a 60-acre lake with a beach. If that wasn’t enough, you’ve also the Oxhey Woods with its rambling walks and marvellous sculpture trail.

That trail is just one example of how good Northwood is for families. Everything London has to offer is within easy reach – the Overground can get you to Kew Gardens in less than an hour – and you’ve got plenty in your back garden to keep the children entertained. Not only that, but the schools in Northwood are exemplary.

With so much to find within Northwood, it’s hard to pick just a few highlights, but we recommend:

  • You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to green spaces. Whether you’re rambling through Ruislip Woods, playing in the numerous local parks, or just enjoying the quiet, leafy streets, there’s plenty of greenery in Northwood.
  • The Ruislip Lido really does have something for everyone, with a beach, fishing, a narrow gauge railway, and even a bird-feeding platform.
  • Northwood golfers are spoilt for choice with many courses in easy reach. Northwood Golf Club and Sandy Lodge Golf Club are standout examples.
  • The schools of Northwood are particularly impressive, with both St Helen’s and Merchant Taylor’s schools offering a world class education on your doorstep.

Attractions in Northwood

Given its name, it’s unsurprising that there’s plenty of greenery and woodland in Northwood, despite its proximity to central London.

And if you’re surprised to find such large green spaces in Northwood, you might be even more surprised to find a beach. Ruislip Lido is a 60-acre lake with sandy beaches on the edge of Ruislip Woods. Build sandcastles, have fun on the splash pad, or explore the pirate ship, or take a trip around the lido and through the woods on Britain’s longest 12” gauge railway.

You’ll find another excellent green space in Oxhey Woods and the sculpture trail that makes for a fantastic day out with children. The Woods themselves are 100 hectares of ancient semi-natural woodland featuring a number of walking routes, and the sculpture trail features contributions from renowned artists such as Dan Cordell, Will Embliss, and the Tree Pirates.

For something a little different, head to Holland & Holland Shooting Grounds. Set within 60 acres of beautiful countryside, this shooting club has been providing careful shooting tuition with shotguns and rifles since 1939. Instruction is tailored to the individual, so it’s perfect for the expert or the amateur. There’s a selection of courses each designed for different skill levels, as well as an indoor rifle range.

For another fantastic destination with the kids, Jurassic Island Adventure Golf is an 18-hole mini golf course with a prehistoric twist. As you putt past the cascading waterfalls and tropical palm trees, you’ll spot the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex or the terrifying Spinosaurus. Play for an audience of a mother Triceratops and her children, or take tips from a friendly Stegosaurus. Children will learn fascinating facts as well as having a good time, and pets are welcome too!

Bars, Restaurants and Nightlife

Whether you’re looking for a drink, a meal, or a great night out, there’s plenty of fantastic destinations in Northwood.

Lomito is the result of an Anglo-Argentine love affair, when two people met in 1973 and combined their cuisines into something special on the plates at Lomito. Beef plays a big role at Lomito and they’re understandably very proud of their steaks and burgers, but you’ll find other delicious dishes on the menu, including vegetarian options.

For a taste of Italy, Northwood Piazza is an authentic, family-run restaurant offering delicious pizza, pasta, and Italian specialties, all cooked with the best in-season ingredients and served within a friendly, atmospheric restaurant. A party room with space for 30 people means they can host almost any event you can imagine, all catered with incredible, authentic Italian cuisine.

For a great place to drink, head to the Black Horse. A traditional yet unique local pub, the building dates back to the 1700s and retains a number of original features with some modern twists. All the big games are shown on HD and 3D TV screens around the pub, and live bands play every Friday. There’s a huge selection of beers, ciders, ales, wines, spirits, and both soft and hot drinks. Classic pub food is available alongside, from chicken roast dinners to fish and chips, as well as an Indian menu with Kenyan culinary influences. The Black Horse even offers a Kenyan Koroga experience, where you cook your own dish around a coal pit barbecue!

If you’re looking to let out your inner superstar, Sync offers a place to eat, sing, and shine. There’s four karaoke rooms of differing sizes, so you can pick the right one for your group. Enjoy the huge cocktail menu, wide range of wines, spirits, beers or soft drinks. For the hungry, there’s also a delicious American-inspired menu filled with sharing options. Whether you’re planning a children’s party, a hen party, or just a night out with some friends and family, you’ll be welcome at Sync.

St Helen’s Sports Centre is linked to St Helen’s School, and offers a wealth of facilities no matter what form of exercise you prefer. The centre has 21 acres of stunning grounds and offers a 25-metre swimming pool, a 26-station fitness studio, dance studios, a 4-court sports hall with a climbing wall, as well as outdoor tennis and netball courts and an all-weather pitch for football, hockey, and lacrosse.

Northwood offers golfers a wealth of choice, with many golf clubs in the local area. Chief among them is Northwood Golf Club, which has seen much change since it was founded in 1891. Originally built as a 9-hole golf course, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1920 and then mown up to grow potatoes, make hay, and graze sheep to support the war efforts. You won’t find sheep on the fairways today, just a beautiful course and a refurbished club house nestled at the edge of Ruislip Woods.

Sandy Lodge Golf Club sits in the midst of the Moor Park estate, offering both a beautiful and central location. Open since 1910, the 18-hole course was designed by six time Open Championship winner Harry Vardon. Members can choose to enjoy leisurely games or embark on competitions, with coaching and excellent practice facilities on-site.

History of Northwood

As its name would suggest, Northwood was once an area of forest and woodland. It was referenced in the Domesday Book, but despite its proximity to London, it remained a vast woodland until the 19th century. During this time, the Holy Trinity Church – which can still be visited today – was opened to serve the local residents, many of whom were farmers and agricultural labourers.

Development slowly continued, with the arrival of the Metropolitan railway in 1888. With transport to the capital now easily accessible, Northwood made the transition from rural hamlet to an urban residential area.

Although much of the woodland has now been replaced with housing developments, large pockets of greenery have been preserved. It gives an insight into the area’s past and provides a rural haven for the residents of Northwood.
