Wheatley is a large village and civil parish in Oxfordshire, nestled around 6 miles east of Oxford. Wheatley is known for its warm community spirit and is one of the few villages in Oxford with just about everything you need.

The History of Wheatley

Despite Wheatley’s relatively small size, the village bears witness to a fascinating history. One of Wheatley’s main industries was quarrying limestone, which was used for building Windsor Castle, Merton College, ecclesiastical buildings and local cottages.

The ‘village lock-up’, built in 1834, is a stone building in the shape of a hexagonal pyramid. It has a floor space of about 6 feet and headroom of about 8 feet. In the 19th century, it was used to lock up drunks overnight, before sending them to Oxford court. In more recent times, the ‘lock up’ has been opened on May Day. For a small fee, visitors can pay to be locked up themselves. You will receive a certificate to prove it too.

The Grade II listed Victorian Parish church of St Mary and Wheatley Manor House was built in 1601 and is one of the biggest attractions in Wheatley. The manor bears the initials of the original owner, Abraham Archdale.
