The History of Wentworth

The Wentworth Estate and Wentworth Club was originally based around the family home of the Duke of Wellington’s brother-in-law. The estate was transformed in 1923 by W.G. Tarrant, a builder who had been responsible for a number of similar developments, including St George’s Hill and Weybridge.

The original idea behind the estate was for it to be a peaceful retreat for stressed gentlemen from the city, who could escape to the countryside and relax in tranquil surroundings whilst playing a round or two of golf.

When the Great Depression hit in 1923, development stalled, and Tarrant was forced to declare bankruptcy when banks asked for repayments. Subsequently, ownership of the land passed to Wentworth Estates Ltd under the control of Sir Lindsay Parkinson & Co. Ltd. Construction picked up in the late 1930s, before the Second World War led to another halt.

Development picked up significantly after the war and by 1960, most of the available land had been used. In the 1970s, the estate became especially popular among musicians and the likes of The Bee Gees and Sir Elton John became residents.

Over the last few decades, the Wentworth Estate has become especially popular among wealthy Russians, Ukrainians and Kazakhstanis.

One of the interesting aspects of Wentworth Estate is that plots on the estate are protected by covenants put in place when it was first created. This means that houses can be extended but they can never sit on top of each other.

A Green Belt and a trust-controlled wood are also in place through the estate, helping to control growth in the area amid the huge demand for property in the area.

This is not to mention the magnificent and recently refurbished ballroom.

The Wentworth Estate has been synonymous with golf from the very beginning. The exclusive and internationally recognised Wentworth Golf Club is on the doorstep of Wentworth Estate residents. A large number of the estate’s residents are enthusiastic golf fans. Sir Nick Faldo, Ernie Ells and Thomas Bjorn are three of the professional golfers who have taken up residence here too.
