Few of London’s commuting towns promise a more scenic location than Amersham. It may be a short tube-ride from the capital, but the surrounding Chiltern Hills give a true sense of rural seclusion.

Most visitors come to explore the area known as Old Amersham, which is famed for its designer boutiques and historical atmosphere. Coaching inns and quaint pubs add to this appeal, as does the great choice of restaurants.

17th Century Market Hall in Amersham

Contrasting this old world charm is the modern counterpart, Amersham on the Hill. Following the arrival of the Metropolitan line, this area was developed with new housing and infrastructure. For those relocating, it gives a wide choice of properties, from contemporary flats to cottages and spacious houses.

Just a short walking distance from the town centre, the Buckinghamshire countryside unfolds. Fans of the outdoors can make use of the numerous walking routes, including the picturesque Chiltern Heritage Trail. Other attractions include the Chiltern Open Air Museum, which regularly hosts outdoor events, and the impressive Tudor estate of Chenies Manor.

Aside from its beauty, Amersham remains a practical location for families thanks to its first-rate schools. This encourages many newcomers to settle in this sought-after catchment area.

For children aged 11 to 18, renowned secondary establishments include Dr Challoner’s Grammar School and Dr Challoner’s High School for girls. Both of these share a rich heritage dating back to 1624. History of Amersham

Amersham has long been a thriving market community. Traders were encouraged to the area thanks to its prime agricultural land and location on the banks of the River Misborne. Although records suggest a settlement was formed in pre-Anglo-Saxon times, the area wasn’t officially mentioned until the Domesday survey of 1086. During this time, it was little more than a small hamlet with a ‘meadow for 16 ploughs’.

Although it was popular for its Friday market, Amersham remained a sleepy village until the 19th century. During this period, it was the first coach stop for those travelling from the capital to Birmingham. As such, many local businesses flourished to cater for this new demand. Other industries brought prosperity, including chair-making and breweries.

During the 20th century, improvements to infrastructure put Amersham on the map as a sought-after shopping destination. Due to its rural charm and picturesque Georgian buildings, it attracted tourists and visitors from nearby London. That quaint character is still present today as its heritage is kept alive on the winding streets of Old Amersham.
