Whetstone History

According to local legend, the town was named after a specific whetstone, which currently resides outside of the Griffin Public House. It is believed that the stone was used as the base for a medieval cross and was used by soldiers in the area to sharpen their swords prior to the Battle of Barnet. Sadly, historical records show this myth to be largely incorrect – the town was referred to as Whetstone long before the Battle of Barnet in 1471. It was originally known as ‘Le Weston’ in 1398, then ‘Wheston’ in 1417 and ‘Whetstonestret’ in 1439, before being renamed ‘Whetstone’. It’s also possible that the stone is infact a mounting block, connected to an old toll gate. Even so, the Griffin Public House and its whetstone continue to be a celebrated aspect of the Whetstone community, serving good food and ale, and keeping the community’s history alive.
