The historic town was also once home to literary legends Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley, who moved into a house on West Street in 1816. The former composed The Revolt of Islam there in 1817, while the latter worked on Frankenstein.
TS Eliot also lived on West Street during World War I. As well as having a rich historical background, Marlow is ideal for London commuters as it is only 52 minutes away from London Paddington via train. Alternatively, you can drive 10-15 mins to quicker stations at High Wycombe or Maidenhead.
Marlow’s high street is brimming with everything from opticians to school-wear retailers, and has many independent boutiques supporting local business.
Attractions in the town include the National Trust-owned home of former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli; The River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames; and The Hand & Flowers – the first gastropub to hold two Michelin stars.
If entertaining the children (or grandchildren) is a necessity, Marlow is only 30 minutes away from The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. For adults in need of entertainment, independent brewery Rebellion Beer Co holds tastings and a Q&A on the first Tuesday of each month.
