There’s so much within Hampshire’s borders that it’s impossible to detail it all. But these are some of the highlights.
The cities of Hampshire are Winchester, Portsmouth, and Southampton. Winchester rests in the heart of Hampshire. Most famous perhaps for its cathedral, it’s also home to historical landmarks such as Wolvesey Castle, Winchester Castle, and it’s even the final resting place of Jane Austen. As such, Winchester has an air of culture and history that’s hard to replicate.
Hosting HMNB Portsmouth, it's no surprise that Portsmouth is steeped in naval history. Historic warships such as HMS Victory and the Mary Rose call Portsmouth home, but there’s more to Portsmouth than the sea. As a compact city, it's perfect for those who like to walk, and with two cathedrals as well as museums, galleries, a castle and a university, there’s plenty of culture to Portsmouth too.
The modern, brutalist architectural style of Southampton is unique amongst Hampshire towns and cities, but the city is just as historic as any other. It’s the Hampshire city for someone who likes urban bustle, with a busy retail sector and plenty of restaurants and a lively nightlife. There are plenty of green spaces, and the port is home to the annual boat show. There are plenty of villages and towns in Hampshire too. To the north-east is Fleet, the Hampshire town for those who want swift, ready access to London. Despite its proximity, it maintains a village feel, with plenty of green spaces.
Fleet also boasts the largest freshwater lake in Hampshire and a 141-acre nature reserve. Not bad for a town that’s less than an hour from the centre of London by train! At the opposite end of Hampshire in the south-west, you’ll find Ringwood. This used to be the New Forest’s primary market town, and it retains all the quaint delights of a historic town. You’ll find plenty of both independent and high street shops, as well as local pubs and restaurants in Ringwood. The lively market every Wednesday is a must-visit for residents and tourists alike. To the south, within the New Forest, lies Lymington on the Hampshire coast. It’s often called the sailing capital of England thanks to its two enormous marinas, hosting hundreds of fishing boats and yachts.
This Georgian market town is filled with independent and specialist shops, period cottages and houses, and plenty of local pubs and restaurants. It also operates a regular car and passenger ferry to the Isle of Wight. Stockbridge has a reputation amongst food lovers thanks to its chic eateries and tearooms, not to mention the traditional butchers and delicatessen. It even hosts its own annual food festival, which might be why Stockbridge High Street was "best foodie street" in the 2010 Google Street View Awards.
Aside from food, Stockbridge hosts plenty of art galleries and craft shops, making it one for both food lovers and artists alike.
