Guide to Muswell Hill

If you are looking to buy or rent property in the London area, look no further than Muswell Hill. An historic and sophisticated suburb in the heart of north London, Muswell Hill has been voted one of the five most sought-after areas in London. Properties in the area range from traditional townhouses to modern, semi-detached homes. Located in the London Boroughs of Haringey and Barnet, records of the town date back to the 12th century.

Muswell Hill’s first owner was the Bishop of London, who used the area to house a newly established order of Catholic nuns. The town is named after the ‘Mossy Well’, a natural spring that was believed to possess miraculous healing powers. Legend has it that a king who visited the area was cured of his ailments after bathing in the well’s waters. Muswell Hill is located a mere 6.5 miles from the city of London. Although the town is not part of the central tube system and does not have its own railway system, a well-established bus service regularly runs through the area, providing transport to London and the nearby train services of Hornsey and Alexandra Palace.

The area is home to six churches, including a United Reform church, a Methodist church, a Catholic Church, and a C of E church. There is also a synagogue, representing the area’s diverse religious culture. The town’s shopping centre is well established and comprises Fortis Green Road and Muswell Hill Broadway.

Architecture in the area is decidedly Edwardian-themed, and many buildings still retain their original, exquisitely designed facades. A significant number of buildings are listed, including the town’s Everyman Cinema. Muswell Hill prides itself on its exceptional array of schools.

Primary schools in the area include the Our Lady of Muswell RC Primary School, the St James Primary School, and the Eden School, a Jewish Primary school that welcomes children of all religious denominations and was the first Primary Free School to be commissioned by the government. Secondary schools include the Alexandra Park School and the Fortismere School, both of which have outstanding reputations.
