Remnants of the town’s medieval past can still be seen today. The oldest part of St Peter’s Church dates back to Norman times, while the former Hospital of St James and St John – established in the mid-12th century – makes up part of Brackley’s Magdalen College School. It remains the oldest building in Great Britain to be in continuous use by a school. Historically, Brackley’s fortunes were closely entwined with the lace and wool trades. However, they largely died out with the dawn of Industrialisation, and few traces remain to this day. In their absence, the town has become a perhaps unlikely hub for the world of motorsport, owing to its proximity to Silverstone Circuit. The current Mercedes team is based in Brackley and can trace its roots back to the Tyrrell Racing Organisation, which was founded back in the 1950s.

Guide to Brackley

The south Northamptonshire market town of Brackley occupies a key position on the historic London to Birmingham and Oxford to Cambridge trade routes. Today, residents can reach the capital in under two hours and Birmingham in less than 90 minutes, making it a popular choice for commuters.

Two decades later in 1215 – the year of Magna Carta – Brackley was chosen as the site for an important meeting between barons and representatives of King John.
