Guide to Harwell

Harwell is a village situated in the attractive Oxfordshire countryside to the west of Didcot. Renowned for being at the forefront of science, technology and business, Harwell is home to state-of-the-art and large scale facilities of the Research Complex and Diamond Light Source (the UK’s national synchrotron facility). The site of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Diamond Light Source was originally a Royal Air Force station between 1937 and 1944 and subsequently the site of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment.

Harwell has two village shops – a butcher and a newsagent/off licence. Located on the High Street, The Hart of Harwell is a welcoming pub and restaurant which also holds events during the year. A highlight of the year is the Harwell Feast, an annual family event held at the end of May on the Bank Holiday weekend. Entertainment includes a high street parade with floats, hot air balloon, dance displays, live music and much more. A number of clubs and societies in the village and in the nearby town of Didcot play a large part in the local area and include a scout group, tennis club, rugby and football clubs plus many more. Harwell Primary School is situated in the village with secondary schools in Didcot including St Birinus School (Language and Technology College) and Didcot Girls’ School.
