While the roots of Builth Wells can be traced all the way back to post-Roman times, the town grew in importance with the discovery - and later commercialisation - of natural springs in the area. Two wells were eventually established at Glannau and Park Wells, allowing visitors to take the waters. The popularity of the wells may have been relatively short-lived, but the town boasts a number of other sites and events that continue to attract visitors to this day. Chief among them is the Royal Welsh Show, one of the biggest events on the British agricultural calendar, which takes place in Builth Wells every July. Other local attractions include the historic Builth Bridge, which was built in 1779, and The Groe - a large park containing a stone circle, a wall memorial and an imposing statue of a prize bull.

Guide to Builth Wells

Sitting at the confluence of the River Wye and the River Irfon in Powys, Builth Wells is a small yet significant market town that rose to prominence during the Victorian and Edwardian ages thanks to its health-giving natural springs. While there are no major cities close to Builth Wells, the town offers decent transport links via its railway station (Builth Road), which is on the Heart of Wales Line. The route connects Craven Arms in Shropshire with Llanelli, the largest town in Carmarthenshire. A number of important trunk roads also run through or close to the town. Both the A483 Swansea to Manchester road and the A470 Cardiff to Glan Conwy road cross the River Wye at Builth Wells.
