Chessington is situated in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames within Greater London. It appears in the Domesday Book as Cisedune and Cisendone, which is derived from the Anglo-Saxon meaning "hill belonging to Cissa”. Local country house Chessington Hall was once home to Samuel Crisp, a close friend and major influence on the work of novelist Fanny Burney. Today, the town is best known as the home of theme park resort Chessington World of Adventures, which attracts more than 1.5 million visitors a year and also incorporates Chessington Zoo and a hotel.
