Kew is a suburban district located in the borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is the location of important historical documents such as the Domesday Book, as well as once being home to artists such as Thomas Gainsborough and Johann Zoffany during the 18^th century. The name Kew is a combination of two words: the Old French kai (meaning “landing place”) and Old English hoh (“spur of land”). During the French Revolution, scores of refugees established themselves in Kew, having built many of the houses of this period.
