Geography, transport & economy

Hertfordshire (often abbreviated to Herts) is a vibrant mix of urban towns and stunning countryside villages. The county is home to a number of waterways, including the River Lea, River Stort and River Ver, and is an idyllic habitat for hundreds of species of fauna and flora. Hertfordshire is also home to the Chiltern Hills, a chalk embankment that has been formally recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Hertfordshire is located immediately north of London, and many people living in the county commute regularly to the capital city for work and recreation. Transport links between Hertfordshire and London are plentiful, with bus services and the West and East Coast Main Lines offering services to and from King’s Cross and London Euston. Numerous roads pass through the county, including the M25, the A1, the A5 and the M11.

The headquarters of Tesco, JD Wetherspoon and GlaxoSmithKline are located in Hertfordshire. Since the 1920s, the area has been famous for housing some of Britain’s biggest film studios, MGM-British Studios and Leavesden Film Studios (owned by Warner Bros. Entertainment). Many notable films have been made in Hertfordshire, including the original Star Wars trilogy, the James Bond film GoldenEye and, more recently, the Harry Potter series.
